Trip Report

Day Hike - Mount Rose

Good hike with surprisingly decent weather.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • The trail below Horse Camp is well maintained.  Rough in places above HC, and there were several inches of new snow near the top from last weekend's storm. Small snow patches began around 3,200' and transitioned into all snow. I was up there one week ago and expected less due to a couple of warm days - not the case! It's still a few feet deep on the higher slopes, and is softening up with continued punch-through hazards.

We started from the cars in partial sunshine, ended at the cars in partial sunshine, and experienced a mix of snow/wind/rain in between. A cold N/NW wind accompanied by horizontal snow hit us a couple hundred feet below the summit in the burn area. It was not a white out, and we all reached the summit. But we only stayed long enough for a couple of quick photos and passed on lunch. Descending the soft, slick snow was a bit tricky. By the time we got back into the trees the sun peaked out here and there with snow flurries that eventually turned to light drizzle and into partial sunshine at the cars. Turned out to be more adventurous than usual on Ol' Rosie!
