Trip Report

Alpine Scramble - Three Way Peak

Successful summit of Three Way, edging our way around weather systems, and enjoying good conversation for the first Mountain-Queers outing.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles

Despite some light sprinkles at Chinook Pass when we arrived, it quickly dried out, and we enjoyed good weather, if some limited views on the journey in and out via the PCT.  Not very crowded at Sheep Lake heading in, but coming out on a Saturday afternoon was another story.  Above Sheep Lake but before Sourdough Gap, we heard multiple choruses of coyotes, but seeing them was obscured by low clouds.  Impressive to hear!

We had downloaded the GPS track of John Murphy, and we followed this closely, both in terms of where to leave the trail and where to weave between rock outcroppings to access the ridge line.  However, the final rock summit was easy to navigate and certainly not worth the T5 rating given.  On the way back, we stopped to check out the local marmots and pikas, then headed over the saddle to look down on Crystal Lake.  On the hike out, we enjoyed huckleberries as well, but their season is almost over.

Overall, a successful first Mountain-Queers scramble trip.  Here's hoping for more in the future!
