CANCELED - La Wis Wis Campground Car Camp

Enjoy two popular lake hikes near White Pass, camping Saturday night at scenic La Wis Wis Campground. Saturday's hike will be to Deer and Sand Lakes and Sunday's hike will be to Packwood Lake.

This weekend car camp involves day hiking to Deer and Sand Lakes on Saturday, camping Saturday night at La Wis Wis Campground on SR 12 and day hiking to Packwood Lake on Sunday.  Fees for the adjacent campsites at La Wis Wis Campground will be divided equitably among all participants and collected at the Sand Lake Trailhead.  Signup for the car camp is by registering for both day hikes.  Anyone registering for one of the day hikes, must also register for the other one, and participate in the Saturday night encampment.  Compliance is monitored by requiring leader permission for both day hikes.

The day hikes are described in the write-ups in the Day Hikes section of the web site.  We will meet at 10 AM Saturday at the Deer and Sand Lake trailhead by Leech Lake, reached by turning left at the east end of White Pass on SR 12 onto the short road to Leech Lake and parking in the Pacific Crest Trail parking lot.  There are restrooms near the trailhead.  Each car parked there must display a Northwest Forest Pass or National Park Pass.

After the hike, we will caravan to La Wis Wis Campground, by turning right on SR 12 and then right into La Wis Wis Campground.  After setting up camp, we will have a camp dinner together and then, if fire regulations permit, build a campfire and roast smores, followed by lively conversation.

Sunday morning we will have a camp breakfast, break camp and then caravan to the Packwood Lake trailhead, by turning right on SR 12, turning left at Snyder Road and continuing to the Packwood Lake parking lot at the end of the road.  There is a restroom there, but not on the hiking route.  Each car parked at the trailhead parking lot must display a Northwest Forest Pass or National Park Pass.

The hike in to Packwood Lake is on a well-maintained trail on a gentle grade, mostly under a forest canopy, with 1200 feet gain over 4.6 miles hiking in and 300 feet gain on the hike out.  At the half way point each direction we will stop at a small waterfall for a rest break.  If the weather permits, there will be an opportunity to swim in the lake after lunch.

On the drive home, there will be the option for a refreshment stop at a restaurant in Packwood.  It will be outdoors if the pandemic has not ended and indoors if it has.
