Strokes and Manuevers - Kitsap Lake

Learn how to make your boat go where you want it with the most efficient types of maneuvering strokes.

  • Easy
  • Mileage: 7.0 nm
  • Maximum Wind: 13 kts
  • Maximum Waves: 0.5 ft
  • Maximum Currents: 2 kts

Meet (show up) at Kitsap Lake city park at 1978 Price Road NW, Bremerton, WA at 9:00am. (Those coming from Seattle can take the 7:35am Bremerton ferry.) Restrooms open at 8:00am. We'll do a few drills onshore then jump in boats. If the weather turns hot, I'll move the start time up by one Seattle-Bremerton Ferry.

There’s much more to maneuvering your boat than just forward, reverse, and braking on one side to turn. Learning the maneuvering strokes allows you to control your boat better in wind or waves, or simply to make the boat go where you want it with the least amount of effort. Improving your strokes makes kayaking more fun! It provides you the fundamentals for training later in wind, waves, current, and surf.

In this clinic, we start with the fundamentals and “layer” our way up. We’ll cover edging, turning, bracing, sideways movement strokes. Specifically, bow / stern / hip rudders; low brace turn; draw on the move; sculling draw; bow sweeps.

The two days gives us time to cover them all and to practice on a set of bouys I bring out.
