Sea Kayak Conditioning Series - Tacoma Narrows

We will sea kayak from Gig Harbor, into the Narrows and use the current to take us under the Bridge to/from Narrows Park. Flatwater pace will be 3.4 kts so bring a home-made drogue.

  • Sea Kayak III
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 10.2 nm
  • Maximum Wind: 13 kts
  • Maximum Waves: 1.5 ft
  • Maximum Currents: 1.5 kts
  • Pace: Flatwater pace of 3.4kts

Meet at the Randall boat launch in Gig Harbor at 9:30am. The coordinates are 47.338063686281295, -122.58208781668289. It is at the end of Randall, so easy to find. We may have to park a block or two away, so consider bringing wheels. No restrooms here, nor many hiding places, so either stop before getting to the launch or we can shoot across the bay and make a quick pit stop at restrooms there.  There are also plenty of beaches along the route, which will be quicker.

Conditioning series events are intended to get people out on the water to develop strength and endurance.  A secondary goal is to offer regular outings, particularly through the winter.

The main focus is steady forward paddling.

If you paddle faster than a 3.4kt flatwater pace, consider bringing a home made drogue.  Mind you, after leaving Gig Harbor we will be moving faster than that with the current but this is our target "perceived effort" pace.

We will stop at Narrows Park for lunch and to let the current direction change. There are restrooms (and picnic tables) there but I am unsure if they are unlocked.

Whilst this is not a clinic, for anyone who wishes, I will offer some modest forward stroke training.
