Navigation and Trip Planning Field Day - Suquamish to Keyport

Meet at Keyport Mercantile (park near the boat ramp) at 9:00am. State your boat to the left of the boat ramp on the gravel beach. Address for your auto nav system is 15499 Washington Ave NE, Keyport, WA. "Pilot" your way there!

You will be able to get coffee at the Mercantile; bathroom for customers, Port-a-potties for others. We will probably go here after the paddle for coffee and an exercise.

This is a makeup session for those who missed the field day Sept 8th.

Before coming: please study the notes from the class, since it has been a while. You have all Saturday to do so! Remember I also sent out a video about compass use.

Bring along:

Compass (both handheld and if you have one, deck)

String for measuring distance

Longest billed cap you have

Chart- a proper navigation chart, not sea trails. I will bring a few.

Chart case

Grease pencil- make notes on your chart case or on your boat

Information you would normally have if you were planning and doing this trip yourself.

Lunch (bring along, or you can get a sandwich from the Mercantile if you come early)

Plan for the day

Beach talk. Paddle to “Old Man House” just south of Suquamish. We may form an inline tow buck a current in both directions! Or we’ll find somewhere to have lunch on a beach. We’ll be visiting buoys, ferrying across current, doing dead reckoning. At various times during the day we will have some on land exercises. You will get more practice in taking a compass bearing and drawing a line on the chart, and the reverse. Upon our return to Keyport we will take a (virtual) trip into the Broken Island Group using all the navigation methods.
