Seattle MAC - Climbing Trip - Smith Rock

Memorial Day weekend climbing trip! This trip will be available to half of the students in MAC. Another 4 day climbing trip will take place over the beginning of Spring Break which the other half of the students will be able to come on, in order to keep group sizes and leader recruitment manageable.

Participants must have attended at least two lead climbing workshops and have passed the lead climbing test / received their lead climbing badge. Exceptions will be made for kick-off trips early in the year where new members with limited climbing experience will be welcomed.

Required Equipment

Climbing stuff, camping stuff, layering system, personal comfort items. Remember that Smith Rock is in the high desert and although it can be scorching during the day, it can still be cold and WINDY at night. Come prepared for a wide variety of weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, and wind. 

  • Climbing shoes
  • Harness that fits over the clothing you climb in
  • Helmet
  • Belay device (lead belays with gri gri, rappelling with ATC)
  • PAS
  • Autoblock

  • Backpack or bag that holds all of your gear (40L preferred for carrying group gear)
  • Small-medium duffel bag for overnight gear
  • Sleeping bag
  • Sleeping pad
  • Wool/synthetic socks (minimum of three pairs)
  • Boots (worn in with sturdy tread, seams, and laces)
  • Shorts (synthetic)
  • T-shirt (avoid cotton and save one for the ride home)
  • Long sleeve shirt (synthetic)
  • Long underwear (synthetic)
  • Warm Jacket (fleece or wool)
  • Warm pants (fleece or wool)
  • Waterproof shell (jacket and pants, breathable and a hood on the jacket
  • Stocking cap (wool or synthetic)
