Special canyoneering skills workshop for MAC leadership students. This course has prerequisites. Inquire with Carl if you have questions. All day practice, 9-5

  • For Beginners (Getting Started Series)

9-5pm, meeting in the lobby

PREREQUISITES

  • Must be a Junior or Senior (or have demonstrated a high level of leadership) in at least your 2nd year in MAC (no exceptions)
  • Must have demonstrated a high level of technical competence. Examples:
    • Ability to proficiently teach belay escape & crevasse rescue 
    • Ability to teach lead climbing & understanding of lead climbing concepts
    • Ability to build trad anchors proficiently
  • Must be able to swim 25 yards without buoyancy
  • Current Wilderness First Aid Certificate

Topics: Personal movement & Rigging

  • Review personal movement
    • PAR exercise ascend, knot pass, convert, descend, knot pass
  • Canyon anchors
  • Releasable Systems
  • Releasing and re-setting a releasable system
  • Fixed systems
  • Cleaning the anchor, rappelling, and retrieving the rope
  • Sequencing party members
  • Rigging a retrievable hand line
  • Retrieving a hand line from a rappel anchor
  • Guided Rappel

Canyoneering hardware/harnesses available to borrow from The Mountaineers Canyoneering committee. 

Students will need to provide: 

  • Helmet
  • Pea-less whistle (Fox 40 is recommended – they’re cheap)
  • Alpine draw plus an additional single runner
