Paddling in Moving Water - Deception Pass

Introduction to currents, including bracing and rescues in moving water.

  • Sea Kayak III/IV
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 8.0 nm
  • Maximum Currents: 4.0 kts

Bowman Bay Boat Launch, ready to paddle at 10 AM.  (Discovery Pass Required)

This course is an  Introduction to Currents

We will practice some braces and rescues (refresher) in Bowman Bay, before heading around the corner to the swirling, boiling, whirling waters of Canoe Pass.  We’ll be entering the pass just after slack and learn techniques as the current builds.  The exercises will be "challenge by choice" meaning you may opt out of anything you wish.

PLEASE wear helmet (a bike helmet is acceptable), long and short tow (if you have them).

The current is forecast to build to 4.3 kt.  We will learn how to enter and exit current for maximum benefit, eddy hop, and ferry glide. Bracing skills will be covered including how to use a low brace in current. Assisted rescues will be practiced before entering current (and almost certainly after entering current).

Current is one of my favorite places to play.  Come see what all the fuss is about in a safe and supportive environment. Participants should be willing to get wet, practice skills, try new things, push limits and be safety support for others.

It will meet the requirements of the Intermediate Kayaker Badge requirement for taking a currents clinic.
