CHS 2 Hike - Rattlesnake Ledge

SUNRISE HIKE! - Hike to Rattlesnake Ledge by 6:00am for sunrise. CHS hike led at a CHS 2 pace (2.0-3.0 mph)

  • Moderate
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 6.5 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 2,000 ft
  • Pace: 2.0-2.5 mph

We will meet at 4:30am at Tibbetts valley parking lot or 5am at the Rattlesnake Trailhead: https://g.co/kgs/FkTyaYq

We will practice hiking in the dark with headlamps (and possibly in the rain) regardless.  We will go on the Ledge weather permitting only.  Safety first!

Bad weather alternative: 7:30am.

This is probably a familiar route for some of you, so why not use it as an opportunity to try out an "alpine start" and hike with a headlamp?

We will meet at 4:30am, hike the 2-mile-1200ft elevation gain to the lower/middle ledge (depending on time), cook up some hot coffee/cocoa (provided by leaders) while we enjoy the sunrise, and continue on a bit further to reach 3,000' before turning around.    (Please be sure to have 1) a HEADLAMP! 2) a cup for some hot beverages, 3) warm clothes, in addition to the 10 essentials.)

Here is the proposed route.

We may be going a little slower as we get used to hiking with headlamps, so I suspect the pace will be closer to 2 than 3.

If the weather turns out lousy, we will postpone the start time by 3 hours and make it a morning hike instead.

You can read about the hike here (we will be going 1+mile further):
