This course is designed to prepare students to learn the skills to lead climb single pitch traditional routes at crags. Students will be given time and education to safely and efficiently place gear and develop new climbing skills that will help them break into a new type of climbing.

Students must be already leading sport routes (bolted routes) to be eligible for this course. 

Applications will be available starting December 1, 2021. Application period is December 1-15th and course participants will be updated on whether they've been accepted by the end of December, if not sooner.

Required Equipment

Required:

  • one set of cams (approximately matching BD camelots size .3 to a #3)
  • one non-locking full strength carabiner per cam
  • set of nuts (offset or regular, we recommend the mid-range sizes #5-11) with a non-locking carabiner to rack nuts
  • helmet
  • harness
  • rock shoes
  • 6 24 inch alpine slings with 2 wire gate carabiners per sling
  • 3 or 4 locking carabiners
  • auto blocking  belay device (Petzl reverso, BlackDiamond ATC Guide, etc)
  • nut tool
  • 20 feet cordalette (7mm nylon, 5mm tech cord or spectra) or triple length alpine sling
  • Climbing tape or crack gloves (Outdoor Research, Ocun, BlackDiamond etc)
Optional:
  • chalk bag
