January Winter Conditioning Runs: 5-7 miles - Spring Lake & McGarvey Open Space

Winter Trail Running Conditioning Course runs from 5-7 miles. You will need to complete 2 course runs per month over Dec, Jan and Feb to graduate.

Meet 8am at the south end of the parking lot near the Spring Lake boat ramp, is at the south end of W Spring Lake Drive SE. The trail begins to the south. Parking in lot - DISCOVER passes required. Following introductions, description of route and current trail conditions, plan to start running by 8:10 am. There are no public bathrooms at the trailhead or anywhere along the route - nearest facilities are in Petrovitsky Park to the west.

Directions: Spring Lake–Lake Desire is east of Renton near Fairwood. From the Maple Valley Highway, SR-169, or SE Petrovitsky Road, take 196th Avenue SE, then SE 183rd Street to East Spring Lake Drive. Follow around the lake to the trailhead at the end of West Spring Lake Drive SE. There is also a boat launch nearby.

We will follow a clockwise loop for ~6 1/4 miles total distance with 1,105 ft elevation gain, through Lake Desire, Echo Mountain, McGarvey Park Open Space, Wetland 14 Natural Area, and ending back near the Spring Lake boat ramp. We will look to do an avg pace of 4 mph: moderate to fast (depending on group comfort) hike uphill and 4.5-5.0 mph straighaway and downhill.

  • Waterproof jacket, hat, buff, gloves, sunglasses; running-specific gaiters recommended
