Basic Sea Kayaking Student Paddle - Cornet Bay to Skagit Island

Basic Sea Kayaking Student Paddle

  • For Beginners (Getting Started Series)
  • Mileage: 7.8 nm

Cornet Bay Boat Ramp- Deception Pass State Park.

As discussed in class, slack in the channel between Hope Island and Ala Spit is 4:19PM. We'll be timing our paddle to cross there at that time.

Meet:  11:20 AM

Launch: 12:20 AM

Need a Discovery Pass to park at parking area.  Can be purchased on site for the day (or the annual pass).  Cost is, I believe $10/day and $30 for annual.

For those renting boats and drysuits from Kayak Academy plan on arriving no later than 11:20 so you can get your gear sorted out and be ready to launch at 12:20PM.

Paddle Plan:

  • Paddle east from Cornet to Skagit Island
  • Brief stop at Cascadia Marine Trails Campsite at beach on NW side/end of Skagit.
  • Continue clockwise around east end of Skagit Island.
  • Cross to SE end of Hope Island and around to south side of Hope.
  • Pause at beach for snack/rest break and to practice wet exits, self, and assisted rescues
  • Cross channel from Hope to Ala Spit
  • Follow shore line back around Hoypus Point to launch
  • Back at launch site around 6PM
  • Optional post-paddle dinner at Skagit River Brewery 404 S 3rd St, Mount Vernon, WA 98273
