How to Suffer Outside | Author Talk (virtual)

Join the Tacoma Hiking & Backpacking Committee to hear about Diana Helmuth's book "How to Suffer Outside" and learn how you can begin your hiking or backpacking journey.

Adventurer, writer, and podcast producer Diana Helmuth introduces her new book, How to Suffer Outside: A Beginner's Guide to Hiking and Backpacking (Mountaineers Books). Diana's book, illustrated by Latasha Dunston, offers a "nonprofessional" hiker's down-to-earth advice. Helmuth takes a humorous, practical, and often salty approach to outdoor recreation. Yet she is also an ardent (and well-informed) backpacker whose stories will get us thinking about gear, food, leave-no-trace principles, and inclusive practices out on the trails.

Diana, who's based in Oakland, CA, will join us via Zoom from 7 - 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2021. Her presentation includes a Q&A with Tacoma Mountaineers volunteer Nathalie op de Beeck, after which we will open the conversation to attendees' questions and discussion.

DIANA HELMUTH has been in love with backpacking since she was a teenager and has hiked extensively throughout the western US, Europe, and Chile. She studied cultural anthropology at the University of California– Berkeley and the American University in Cairo. When she’s not on the trail or writing, she builds things in startup land and produces the occasional podcast. How to Suffer Outside is her first book.
