Mountaineer of the Week: Shelly Dearmon

Each week we bring you a personal story from one of our members. For our member profile this week we talked to...

Name Shelly Dearmon
Branch Seattle
How long have you been volunteering with The Mountaineers? 2021
What activities do you participate in with The Mountaineers? GoHike Leader and CHS Leader

10 essential questions:

What first brought you to the mountaineers?

My sister! She encouraged me to try a couple hikes, in preparation for our trip to Peru. Well, a couple hikes turned into a Mountaineers membership. My sister has been a Mountaineers leader for years, and leads for CHS. She thought I should try CHS, as that would be a good way to condition for our trip. As a non-hiker, this idea was intimidating! One hike after the next and I graduated... thanks to my sis. She inspires me and encourages me!

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE MOUNTAINEERS MEMORY?

My first ever Mountaineers hike at Baker River in the pouring rain. Jeni and Liz, the leaders, showed me how to climb over downed trees and forge creeks.

What is one thing you do as a leader to make your participants feel welcome?

Greet everyone with a smile.

LIGHTNING ROUND

Sunrise or sunset? Sunset
Smile or game face? Smile
What's your favorite close-to-home adventure? Meadowdale Beach
What 11th Essential do you bring on most trips? Dill Pickles
Post-trip meal or go-to place of choice? Zeke's
What's next on your bucket list? Trek in Europe... Portugal, Ireland, Scotland!

NOMINATE YOURSELF FOR MOUNTAINEER OF THE WEEK

Mountaineers come in all shapes and sizes, varying widely in age, outdoor experience, and length of time involved in The Mountaineers. Part of what makes our community so unique is the broad diversity of our leadership, and we hope these weekly features highlight how our trip leaders, course instructors, and committee and branch officers support our community. We are always seeking self-nominations for our Mountaineer of the Week, and we invite you to share your story. Trust us, we want to hear from you!
