#GiveBIG on May 8 to Support Life-Changing Books

Mountaineer Katie DeCramer moved to Seattle from the Midwest in 2013. Thanks to a copy of "Day Hiking Snoqualmie", she spent the summer exploring and falling in love with her new home. This May, we celebrate #GiveBig, and elevate stories of transformation like Katie's in honor of our storied Mountaineers Books publishing division.

#GiveBIG on May 8 to Support Life-Changing Books

Books give power to our personal stories - whether you want to discover a new place, learn a new skill, make a lifestyle change, or feel a sense of connection with a wild place or a fellow adventurer.

For Mountaineers member Katie DeCramer, a new chapter began when she moved from the Midwest to Seattle in search of mountains in 2013. Eager to learn about the trails in her new backyard, Katie picked up a copy of the guidebook Day Hiking Snoqualmie (2nd edition) published by Mountaineers Books. After a refresher on wilderness ethics and a thorough examination of the book’s photos and maps, she felt ready for the first of many western Washington adventures.

During that first summer in Seattle, Katie regularly drove east on I-90 with a daypack and trusted guidebook. She immersed herself in the beautiful landscapes, hiking the Ira Spring Trail, trekking up to Olallie Lakes, venturing over to Rainbow Lakes, Annette Lake, and Snow Lake.

“From those Sunday afternoons, I remember the thrill of coming out of tree line and seeing a valley spread below. I remember the first glimpse of the water of a clear alpine lake and the total shock after jumping in. At home later, I marked each trail in my dog-eared copy of "Day Hiking Snoqualmie". More than any single person, website, or group, Mountaineers Books introduced me to the beauty of the Cascade Mountains, right in my new backyard. It helped me arrive in a new place and turn it into my new home.

Today, Mountaineers Books has more than 800 titles in print that empower our outdoor community locally and around the globe -to explore, adventure, and conserve. What was the last book that inspired change in your life?
