Foothills Volunteer Spotlight: Jessica Umayam

Meet Jessica Umayam, a Foothills Hike and Scramble Leader and 2023 Super Volunteer with fond memories doing yoga in the evening light at Seward Park during the Yoga for Hikers, Backpackers, and Trail Runners Course. Jessica is working on the Smoot’s List and loves helping people explore new places.

What brought you to the Pacific Northwest and when did you come?

I moved to Seattle for a work opportunity 15+ years ago. I originally intended to have a two-year adventure and return to Minnesota, but I fell in love with the region and can’t imagine living anywhere else.

What attracted you to The Mountaineers?

I attended a Meet the Mountaineers session and decided to join after learning about the scrambling course. I’ve stayed because of the amazing community and continued learning opportunities.

What have been your favorite volunteer memories with The Mountaineers?

My favorite things about volunteering are planning activities, helping people explore new places, and meeting interesting people.

I led a couple of hikes for the Yoga for Hikers Course last summer and have a very fond memory of doing yoga in the evening light at Seward Park. It was very peaceful and such a great way to end the day.

What are your favorite activities and/or places in the PNW?

I’m working on the Smoot’s List and love visiting new places to bag peaks - the North Cascades is probably my favorite region. I also play beach volleyball at Alki Beach throughout the summer.
