Part of the BeWild Speaker and Film Series

In the summer of 2013 the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) brought together a group of inspiring role models who made history as the first team of African Americans to blaze a trail up America’s highest peak – Denali. To mark the 100th anniversary of the peak’s first ascent, Expedition Denali set out to literally change the face of the mountain.

NOLS ran this expedition to inspire youth of color to get outside, get active, and become stewards of our wild places.  Voted "Heroes of the Year" by Backpacker magazine and awarded the Outdoor Inspiration Award by the Outdoor Industry Association, Expedition Denali has already had a profound impact on thousands of people.

An audience favorite for their comfortable and dynamic prose, Expedition Denali climbers Tyrhee Moore and Rosemary Saal will help raise awareness of the expedition and inspire you to discover the great outdoors and reach your own great heights. Join us to engage a broader constituency in a public dialogue about diversity in the outdoors and to not only make history, but build a legacy

“Expedition Denali did not end with the team coming down from the mountain. Now the real work begins with our mountaineers reaching out to young people and families of color through a nationwide speaking tour and directly engaging with the communities we hope to inspire,” said NOLS Diversity and Inclusion Manager Aparna Rajagopal-Durbin.

Join The Mountaineers on Friday May 16 at 7pm as we engage with the climbers of Expedition Denali through images, film and a gear demonstration. For more information and to get tickets visit: www.mountaineers.org/BeWild.

The Mountaineers is committed to bringing the opportunity of outdoor appreciation to today’s youth via our Youth and Family Initiative. Our youth-outreach programs introduce young people to the benefits of outdoor experience. This event aims to inspire youth to follow their outdoor aspirations so we encourage adults and children to attend. To inquire about discount youth tickets please contact event manager Shauna Broady at shaunab@mountaineers.org.
