Aki Kurose Middle School gets outside!

Aki Kurose, located in the Rainier Valley neighborhood, is a school where the students do not often get the opportunity to get outdoors. They are located in an economically depressed neighborhood, and lack transportation to get their students engaged in outdoor pursuits. Our education department teamed up with Robin Gannet's special education class to get these youth outdoors!

The class will join us for 6 outings from March to May. The first 2 outings were at The Mountaineers climbing wall, where the youth practiced climbing and belaying. We don't often have groups where every participant makes it to the top of the wall, but I was so impressed by their perseverance to get to the top! All 10 youth made it!

Our next outing will take us to the Twin Falls hike, where many of these youth will get their first wilderness experience! The kids are all excited and ready with their 10 essentials, to get out and hike!

If you would like to join us for any of our outings, please email Caitlin O'Brien at caitlino@mountaineers.org.
