2020 Changed our HOW but not our WHY this #GivingTuesday

A lot has changed for all of us in 2020. While we might have changed how we connect, what didn’t change is why. On Tuesday, December 1, The Mountaineers will once again participate in #GivingTuesday, with a goal of raising $15,000 for Mountaineers scholarships.

At The Mountaineers, we experienced dramatic changes to the ways we deliver courses, trips,  youth programs, events, and more. Smaller group sizes, virtual gatherings, online education - we pivoted our resources to ensure continued programming while keeping our community safe.

While we might have changed HOW we connect, what didn’t change is WHY: outdoor access is critical to our physical and mental health. In a year where stress is at an all-time high and morale is at an all-time low, it’s imperative that everyone has access to the benefits of outdoor recreation and the supportive community we share.

At The Mountaineers, donors support outdoor access by providing more than 150 scholarships for youth and adults to participate in courses, camps, and experiential learning. Without this critical support, these kinds of opportunities would be out of reach for many in our community.

For Sam, a mother of two young, nature-loving girls, summer camp scholarships have made a world of difference for her family:

“As hard as I try, financially, Mountaineers camps are entirely out of our reach without scholarship support. Camp is the only way they can experience rock climbing, sailing, outdoor cooking, first aid, and so much more! They are growing up to be smart, caring individuals with an immeasurable love for the outdoors. Both of my girls are already planning on working at The Mountaineers as camp counselors when they are old enough so they can pass on everything they know to the people around them. Thank you for supporting my children and the outdoors!” -Sam Paulsen, mother of Sayda (10) & Marlee (8)

Save the Date: Dec 1

On Tuesday, December 1, The Mountaineers will once again participate in #GivingTuesday, with a goal of raising $15,000 for Mountaineers scholarships. Yes, there’s going to be a lot of emails. But we wouldn’t be asking if it wasn’t mission-critical.

Donate to Support Mountaineers Scholarships

After you #OptOutside, we hope you’ll reflect on your Mountaineers experience and consider paying it forward with a gift of outdoor access on #GivingTuesday. There’s no sugarcoating it: 2021 will likely be another difficult year for all of us. And in yet another year of swirling change, you can help bolster mental and physical health for others by providing influential scholarships for outdoor recreation and connection.

To make giving directly to scholarships easier, you can give through Facebook or our Mountaineers #GivingTuesday donation page. If you have questions about how to make your gift, including gifts of securities or Donor Advised Funds, please reach out to development@mountaineers.org.

While #GivingTuesday will take place on December 1, if you are ready to support student scholarships right now, it's never too early to give. Today we are launching our Facebook fundraiser and hope you’ll give it a like and a share. All gifts received from Nov 15-Dec 1 in support of our MAP Scholarship Fund will count toward our #GivingTuesday goal.
