10 Essentials: Questions

How did you get involved with The Mountaineers?

I took the Wilderness Navigation course so I could be better skilled to travel in the backcountry. But I first heard about The Mountaineers when I read Olympic Battleground by Carsten Lien as part of a cultural history research project with Olympic Nat'l Park. That's when I first learned how instrumental Mountaineers members were in designating Olympic National Park.

What motivates you to get outside with us?

When we're out in the mountains, or even just talking about playing in the mountains, all pretenses drop, the best part of our personalities shine through, and we feel more alive. I have never bonded with people so quickly as I have when we're out on the trail together.

What's your favorite Mountaineers memory?

I had never tried climbing before I took the Intro to Rock course with The Mountaineers. My first time on the rock wall I got a feel for just what a mental and physical balancing act it is, teaching confidence but also self control. It felt really empowering!

Who/What inspires you?

People who work tirelessly to advocate to preserve our parks, trails, and wilderness areas. All of the gorgeous places we love to escape to are only here for us because certain individuals fought tooth and nail for it.

What does adventure mean to you?

It's choosing to go somewhere you've never been, with the slight apprehension of danger- like you are about to attempt something that's way bigger than you are.

Lightning Round

If you could be a rock star at any outdoor activity overnight, what would it be? White water kayaking.
