10 Essentials: Questions

How did you get involved with The Mountaineers?

When I moved to Tacoma, the incredible views of the Olympics to the northwest and Mt. Rainier to the southeast motivated me to move beyond a lifetime of hiking and backpacking, and enroll in the Basic Climbing class. The instruction was world-class, but what got me hooked was The Mountaineers Community.

What motivates you to get outside with us?

Challenging myself outside is the best de-stresser I have found, and getting out has become a critical element of my life. And, depending on what I'm currently into, I can connect with an address-book-full of Mountaineers for a weekend adventure of scrambling, rock climbing, hiking, etc.

What's your favorite Mountaineers memory?

Witnessing sunrise on a glacier climb has to be one of the most ethereal experiences I have known.

Who/What inspires you?

The incredible ethic of Mountaineers' engagement and volunteerism. I see how much time and passion are devoted to making The Mountaineers work, and when I realize that this has been going on for 110 years, I'm humbled and inspired. Add to the mix an equally passionate and hard-working staff, and it starts to explain the depth and strength of our community.

What does adventure mean to you?

Pushing physical and mental limits while seeking challenging experiences and exploring new geographies.

Sunrise or sunset? Sunrise.
Smile or game face? Smile.
What's your happy place? Reading the morning paper with a cuppa joe.
Post-adventure meal of choice? Mexican food, and lots of it!
If you could be a rock star at any outdoor activity overnight, what would it be? Rock climbing.
