10 Essentials: Questions

How did you get involved with The Mountaineers?

Signed up as a basic student.

What motivates you to get outside with us?

I’ve met some of the most rad people ever. Bam Mendiola and Scott Schafer to name two! If I keep meeting people like this I’ll meet Smokey the Bear sooner or later.

What's your favorite Mountaineers memory?

I met Bam during a basic field trip. We team up because we are both brown (let’s be honest, I found comfort in someone who looked similar to me in a sea of people who didn't). They tell me they are gay and a vegetarian. I tell them I’m Filipino but my mom tells me I’m American. Friends ever since! Seeing Bam on this journey has made this memory one of my favorites.

Who/What inspires you?

The outdoors inspires me. The mountain doesn’t care about me but for some reason I’m dedicated to it. I want groupies like that.

What does adventure mean to you?

Adventure comes from the souls. When I was a kid I rode my bike for hours finding every back road in the neighborhood. Now I do it with a board strapped to my feet or a harness strapped to my waist. I’m still searching for every backroad I can find.

Lightning Round
Sunrise or sunset? Sunrise.
Smile or game face? Smile.
What's your 11th Essential? I squirt grape Kool-Aid in my camelback.
Post-adventure meal of choice? Tacos chukis then ice cream from blue bird.
If you could be a rock star at any outdoor activity overnight, what would it be? Surfer. You have nowhere to hide when surfing. You are totally vulnerable to an unforgiving and powerful ocean. I need to be committed to that kind of humility in my life. Keeps me grounded.
