10 Essentials: Questions

How did you get involved with The Mountaineers?

Two of my four children share my love of the outdoors. Both are in college now and we don't get to go on as many adventures as we used to. I was looking for someone who shares my passion for the outdoors and was available when I am. An internet search did the rest.

What motivates you to get outside with us?

An appreciation for how fortunate I am to live in such a beautiful place. Growing up in the Northeast and spending the first four years of my career in Texas before moving to the Northwest in 1989, I am inspired to take advantage of our mountains and the Puget Sound any chance I get.

What's your favorite Mountaineers memory?

Having completed 15 activities in my first 11 months with The Mountaineers, it is difficult to pick one memory. In general, my fondest memories are and will continue to be of the people I have met and get to know through The Mountaineers' activities. A big 'Thank You' to all the leaders that have made my experience with The Mountaineers memorable: Alison Reinhold, Beth Owen, Esther Ladwig, Chris Ensor, Michael Everett, Shirley Rogers, Paul Mocha, John Krawczyk, Jessica Koski, and Dick Hayek.

Who/What inspires you?

My family inspires me. I stay active so that I can keep up with them, especially my four children. I also seek out experiences I can share with them. The Mountaineers is providing me plenty of opportunities to stay active and pass on worthwhile experiences.

What does adventure mean to you?

Adventure means experiencing your first wet exit from a sea kayak, hiking 15 miles in a day with over 4000 feet elevation gain, or backpacking for a week in Denali National Park where you are not at the top of the food chain.

Lightning Round
Sunrise or sunset? Sunrise.
Smile or game face? Smile.
What's your 11th essential? Common sense. Without it, the Ten Essentials are useless.
Post-adventure meal of choice? A burger and beer or Mexican and a margarita.
If you could be a rockstar at any outdoor activity overnight, what would it be? Advanced Sea Kayaking and being able to handle any paddle offered.
