10 Essentials: Questions

How did you get involved with The Mountaineers?

In the 1970's Mary Ann & Cliff Cameron started the Seattle Family Activities group. Under their leadership families with young children participated in activities such as walks in parks, inner tubing at Snoqualmie Lodge, and hiking in the mountains around Mt. Baker Lodge. At that time my wife and I joined the Mt. Baker Committee and hosted with the Cameron's ten day openings in the summer for young families interested in the outdoors.

What motivates you to get outside with us?

The enjoyment of sharing with others the beauty and solitude of nature. Large forest, mountains, coastal beaches, rocky headlands and islands in local waterways weren't available to me in my youth. We are so fortunate to live where we have access to these wonderful areas.

What's your favorite Mountaineers memory?

Sliding on snow down the back side of Table Mountain with our young children to a tarn and a brief, cool family swim. Watching and listening to our grandchildren shouting and laughing while sledding for the first time no more than 15 feet from the entrance to Baker Lodge.

Who/What inspires you?

I've been inspired by the commitment of the Baker Lodge Committee members who volunteer their time, energy, and enthusiasm to operate, maintain, and improve Baker Lodge for club members. I'm also inspired by the smiles on member faces as they leave the lodge after a weekend of outdoor activity.

What does adventure mean to you?

Experiencing something new and meeting new people.

Lightning Round
Sunrise or sunset? Sunset.
Smile or game face? Smile.
What's your happy place? Hikes on ridges with views and along seashores with wind in my face.
Post-adventure meal of choice? Hamburger & a malt.
If you could be a rock star at any outdoor activity overnight, what would it be?  Hiker on the PCT.
