10 Essentials: Questions

How did you get involved with The Mountaineers?

I initially got involved because I wanted to learn more about hiking in the mountains. I grew up in Florida, and moved here from Washington, D.C. This is my first time living near actual mountains and I wanted to learn more about hiking safely, and also find some great spots to hike in.

What motivates you to get outside with us?

I enjoy the magnificent scenery available to us here in the PNW, and I enjoy getting tips from others when on group hikes. It's a great opportunity to share trail tips. I've been on about 55 different hikes in Washington since moving here two and a half years ago, and each time I go out on the trail is a special experience. There's so many awesome places to see and enjoy.

What's your favorite Mountaineers memory?

A photo weekend at Mount Baker Lodge that appeared to be rained out. Several of us went out to photograph in the rain, and then I continued on to do the Chain Lakes Loop hike It was a beautiful hike in a downpour, and is perhaps my favorite hike in Washington so far.

Who/What inspires you?

I'm inspired by people who know what they want are unafraid of doing what it takes to achieve their goals. Fear is a great limiter to our individual potential. Fear of failure, fear of looking foolish, even fear of success. People who can face their fears and persevere despite the fear inspire me.

What does adventure mean to you?

An adventure to me involves doing something or seeing something that is new to me. Lately it means hiking in the Cascades or Olympics, but it could also be exploring a new city. I'm learning more about the Alpine Lakes Wilderness and hope to adventure there more. I hiked to Lake Ingalls on my birthday with a friend, and was excited by the varied landscape as we went from forest to pass and the rocky lake. And we saw goats for the first time!

Lightning Round
Sunrise or sunset? Sunset
Smile or game face? Game face - apparently it's my default face
What's your 11th Essential? My camera
What's your happy place? Either having lunch with a view of a pass or a peak, or swimming in an alpine lake before hiking out

If you could be a rockstar at any outdoor activity overnight, what would it be? Trail running… so I can cover more ground and see more of the great PNW!
