10 Essentials: Questions

How did you get involved with The Mountaineers?

I moved back to the northwest after college and needed people to go hiking with. While looking around I came across The Mountaineers and decided to give it a try. After a couple of years going on hikes I took the scrambling class and got hooked. One thing led to another, and now I’m an instructor for the snowshoeing, navigation, and scrambling classes, a scramble leader, and an intermediate climbing student.

What motivates you to get outside with us?

Getting into the mountains with like-minded people. I can’t think of a Mountaineers trip that I didn’t enjoy. Even if the conditions aren’t great, the company always is.

What's your favorite Mountaineers memory?

There are too many to keep track of!

Editor's Note: He's right. We counted and Brian has participated in  21 events, 46 course related activities, and 208 standalone activities AND he's led 11 events, 4 courses, and 44 activities. That's 334 Mountaineers activities in 6 years - or an average of 1 activity every 6 days!

Who/What inspires you?

The volunteers of The Mountaineers. I am continually amazed by the large group of people who give up their weekends to share their passion for the outdoors with others.

What does adventure mean to you?

For me adventure come from pushing my comfort zone, either physically or mentally. If you look back a few days or weeks later and say “It wasn’t THAT bad” then you had a good adventure. I like to work for sitting on a summit.

Lightning Round
Sunrise or sunset? Sunset.
Smile or game face? Smile.
What's your happy place? Sitting on top of a mountain.
Post-adventure meal of choice? A large bowl of Pho.
If you could be a rock star at any outdoor activity overnight, what would it be?  Alpine climbing.
