Trip Report

Cross-country Ski - Methow Valley Winter Trails

A 15 km loop out of the town "ice rink" trailhead, with very nice variety and views. Strong intermediate skill required for several short, very steep hills. (This report is for a ski we actually did on Jan 15, when we had to change the destination due to conditions.) At 9:00 a.m. it was 19 degrees and was 31 degrees by 2:00 pm.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  •  Our route from the trailhead was MCT, Winthrop Trail, Bitterbrush, Barnsley Lake, Winthrop Trail, Power's Plunge, and MCT.  The snow was groomed, hard, cold and fast, but Power's Plunge wasn't icy so it was skiable.  In icy conditions, please walk or side slip/step down the steep sections.

The photo is the view from the Winthrop Trail as we climbed up to the top of Power's Plunge.  The 15 km took us 4 hours, with a 20 minute lunch stop.  The elevation gain was not significant (500-600').
