Alpine Scramble - Old Desolate

Successful summit of Old Desolate, a long trip on the Wonderland Trail along the Carbon River. Weather was cloudy, misty and sunny great conditions for not getting overheated

  • Road suitable for all vehicles

  • Carbon River road in great shape for bikes.  Trail conditions were good too. 

We left Isput Campground at 8:00 AM.  Departed  the trail at 6000' and traversed over talus to find the basin.  A couple of remaining snow fingers made going up the talus to the Old Desolate ridge a little easier.  We scrambled the False Summit then proceeded to the real summit where we rested and enjoyed the view.  Left the summit and proceeded into basin where we pumped water.  We then found the correct gully for the rest of the descent and intersected the trail at 5700'.
