Winter Scramble - Mount Ellinor

Winter scramble for Kitsap Scramble Class. The goal for this trip is to have a fun climb in somewhat challenging weather conditions.  Current weather forecasts show a brief snow shower of 0.7 to 2 inches in the mid-afternoon followed by light rain (isn't mixed snow and rain the best). Given the weather forecast please bring extra layers and plenty of warm layers. If someone becomes cold because of the moderate pace they will be expected to layer up to get warm and not increase their pace.

  • Strenuous
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 6.6 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 3,270 ft

We will meet at 9 am at the Lower TH parking lot; the Upper TH is still snowed in.
Snow begins about a mile from the TH. The snow is deep enough that crampons work well with it. From the Lower Ellinor TH to the summit the group we'll cover the 3,000 ft gain at 800 to 1,000 ft/hr.

For those interested in a bigger day you can meet me at 7 am at the Big Creek Campground. The group leaving Big Creek will travel the 2,000 feet gain and 3 miles to the Lower Ellinor TH in 90 minutes. If you want to meet me at Big Creek please email me what 5,000 foot snow scrambles you have done this winter and how long the climb took.

Roster
Required Equipment

Required Equipment

• Appropriate clothing for a wet, snowy and windy day. Having a dry base layer to change into at the summit can make the decent much more comfortable

• Waterproof jacket and pants; old rain paints are better for glissading
• Mountaineering boots
• Crampons that you have put on the boots you will be wearing
• Helmet
