Winter Scramble - Cowlitz Gap & Rocks (winter)

Winter scramble to Cowlitz Rocks. A Rainier 100 peak. Leader permission required.

  • Moderate, Winter Scramble
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 8.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 2,400 ft
  • Pace: 1,000 ft/hr

Meet at Longmire at 8:30 AM at the latest. We can consolidate cars and travel together to the Paradise parking lot.

Leader permission required. We will travel as a group around 1,000'/hour and ~2mph. While the distance and gain are not on the high side, we will need to keep a decent pace in order to be back to the cars in time to for the gate closure at 5PM (always subject to change). Short, 5 minute breaks each hour for hydration, food, clothing.  There was a successful trip on 11/18, so we should be in good shape if conditions allow.

The previous time I was on a Cowllitz Rocks trips, we used snowshoes and crampons, but that is entirely dependent on conditions. This will be my first official winter scramble as primary leader.

A detailed email will be sent out a few days prior to the trip.
