Stewardship - Wynoochee Lake

Join the Olympia Mountaineers for a day of trail clearing on the lovely Wynoochee Lakeshore Trail, a beautiful trail in an old growth forest that needs attention. The spring flowers are in bloom.

On Saturday, May 18, we will meet at Haggen Food and Pharmacy at 1313 Cooper Point Rd at 7:00 a.m. ready to leave as soon as possible. Cars will be parked on the far left-hand side of the large parking lot, over by the trees.  Drivers needed.

The road is paved to Wynoochee Lake at 150 miles round trip.  At the lake there's 5 miles of gravel road in fair condition.   Each passenger pays the driver $15.00 for gas and vehicle use.

This will be a one day trip leaving Olympia at 7:00 a.m. and returning at or slightly after 5:00 PM.

The focus would be on clearing the trail of obstacles, down trees and encroaching vegetation using Crosscut Saws and a variety of hand tools.  The material on the trail is mostly smaller limbs in large numbers.  We would take on a short minor restoration of the original trail route, some trail tread and drainage work as we find it.

We will begin at the dam and head north on the eastern side of the lake to the boat ram approximately 3.5 miles.  We will arrange a car shuttle from the boat ramp so that we can focus our time on the trail (less hiking more trail work) and coordinating this May 18 trip location with future WTA work parties.

I am looking for an Assistant Leader, someone interested in becoming a Stewardship and/or Trail Crew Leader.   This trip could serve as a Mentored Asst Lead, the first of two steps toward becoming a Leader.  Even if you aren't ready or interested in Leading this may also be a chance to get out to do some trail work.

Wynoochee Lakeshore trail is a wonderful, multi-use trail covering 16+ miles all the way around Lake Wynoochee.   The trail gets little attention because of its location and lack of notoriety.    Spring is a wonderful time on this trail with some magnificent old growth, wildflowers popping up and new spring growth makes the forest come alive.
