Stewardship - Dry Creek

We will hike in about two miles to take out seven or more downed trees blocking this trail by Lake Cushman. Good opportunity to learn crosscut saw skills, or use them if you have them.

  • High Point Elevation: 1,500 ft
  • Pace: 1.5 mph moving.

We'll meet at Haggens in West Olympia at Cooper Point Road and Black Lake Blvd.  Participants can arrange carpooling.  We'll drive about 50 miles each way to the trailhead on Lake Cushman.  Details will be sent to registered participants a few days before the trip.

The trailhead is near the west end of a causeway across Lake Cushman.  We will walk the private road along the lake to the Dry Creek Trail, and hike to work sites within two miles of the trailhead.  Two WTA work trips on this trail this year left a few trees behind on the trail.  We will log them out.  We plan to have two crosscut saw teams with two sawyers and two swampers on each, and possibly a third D-handled crosscut saw.  Swampers assist the sawyers by clearing branches and brush out of their way using small saws and loppers, and by removing the cut material to the forest off the trail. No prior experience required, and we usually rotate positions.  If you have sawyer certification, this will be a good chance to use it.  If you don't, this will provide some good experience, and some saw time working with our trained and certified award-winning crew.  Snowfall that would impede driving, heavy rain, or strong winds may cause postponement.
