Sea Kayak - Whidbey Island Circumnavigation

Counter-clockwise circumnavigation of Whidbey Island with overnights at Bowman Bay, Fort Casey, and Possession Point. We’ll have time to explore Deception Pass and Fort Casey along the way.

Meet at the Camano Island State Park boat ramp. We'll launch at 9:00 AM so please arrive early enough to pack kayaks, park cars, and be on the water on time.  Launch fee is $7 plus $10 per night parking.

This is a long and challenging paddle even with tidal assist throughout. Weather conditions can make it more so. Participants must have efficient rescue and self-rescue skills that are current.  We'll split all camping fees for Bowman Bay and Fort Casey.

Wednesday, September 25:
Camano Island SP to Bowman Bay, 23 NM
Launch at 9:00 AM and paddle north through Saratoga Passage. Once we get in to Skagit Bay we'll have more current assist the rest of the way to Deception Pass. Camp at the Bowman Bay WWTA site.

Thursday, September 26:
Bowman Bay to Fort Casey, 21 NM
Launch by 6:30 AM and head down the west shore of Whidbey. Slack at Admiralty Head is 2:30 PM so we'll need to be off the water by then (Fort Casey SP). Dinner at Callen's Restaurant to celebrate the halfway point?

Friday, September 27:
Rest day at Fort Casey State Park. Plenty of  time to explore Fort Casey and the lighthouse or just lay around and read on the beach.

Saturday, September 28:
Fort Casey to Possession Pt, 20 NM
Launch at 9:00 AM to catch the flood down to the southern tip of Whidbey Island. Camp at the Possession Point State Park WWTA site.

Sunday, September 29:
Possession Pt to Camano Island SP, 16 NM
Launch at 9:00 AM to ride the flood through Saratoga Passage back to Camano Island SP. Lunch at Village Pizzeria in Langley?

These eight essentials plus The Ten Essentials are required on all sea kayaking trips.  All but the whistle and clothing should be provided with any kayak rental.

  1. Floatation in both ends of the kayak
  2. U.S. Coast Guard approved Personal Flotation Device (PFD)
  3. Paddle
  4. Spray skirt
  5. Bilge pump with floatation
  6. Self-rescue paddle float
  7. Waterproof whistle
  8. Appropriate clothing for the conditions encountered seasonally
