Trip

Sea Kayak - Washington Park to Friday Harbor

The club's classic challenging run, a 22nm run from Washington Park to Friday Harbor, with a free ride back on the ferry. So classic it shows up on the list for two Sea Kayaking award badges. We will ride the morning ebb across the Rosario strait, around the south end of Lopez island, then catch a 4kt flood in Cattle pass on the way north to Friday Harbor. This trip is NOT SUITABLE for basic class students.

  • Maximum Currents: 5.3 kts

We will ride the morning ebb across the Rosario strait, around the south end of Lopez island, then catch a 5kt flood in Cattle pass on the way north to Friday Harbor.  Be ready to play in the standing waves and other fun Cattle Pass gives us!

Be ready to launch from Washington Park by 8am.  We will stage one car at the ferry terminal so speed things up when we get back.  Wheels that fit in your kayak are required as there is  a decent trek to the ferry terminal at Friday Harbor, and trust me, you don't want to have to rush onto the ferry carrying a boat without them.

More details will follow as we get closer.  It should be a long, but rewarding day.

Be ready for a long day of paddling with some good chances at play along the way.  This is a challenging route, one that weather can amplify greatly.  You will want previous experience in currents and tide races.  Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Note, leader permission is not generally required for this trip, however, if your Mountaineers activity history does not include trips with similar current and distance characteristics please contact me before signing up.
