Sea Kayak - Skagit & Hope Islands

Cornet Bay around Skagit and Hope Islands

  • Sea Kayak II
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 8.7 nm
  • Maximum Wind: 10 kts
  • Maximum Waves: 1 ft
  • Maximum Currents: 2 kts
  • Pace: 2.5 knots plus some current assist

We'll meet at 10:00 am at Cornet Bay boat launch area at the kayak  launching beach near the restrooms. Please plan to arrive by 10:00 am or earlier if you need more time to get your gear in order. Launch will be at 11:00 am sharp so we'll have favorable currents throughout the trip. We will take breaks on Skagit Island, Hope Island, and Ben Ure Spit depending on the weather.

We should be back at the Cornet Bay launch site before 4:00 pm.

Remember to bring your Discover Pass for parking or be prepared to purchase one at the kiosk next to the boat ramp.

This is a great launch site as it has a nice beach, lots of parking, and indoor restrooms!

I've paddled this trip before but this is my first time leading a trip here as part of my Mountaineers Trip Leader certification. Long time experienced member Dan Hale will be my mentor for this trip so we're in good hands.

This is a great paddle as it's got a little of everything: Currents, beautiful scenery, potentially challenging winds and waves, and lots of wildlife. It's also kind of cool to see the Deception Pass bridge from the side that isn't in pictures as much.

We will be launching from Cornet Bay and going to Skagit and Hope Islands, stopping on Hope for lunch before heading back to Cornet Bay.

This time of year, the conditions will likely be cold so dry suit, warm hat and gloves and warm layered underclothes required. You may want to bring hot drinks and a hot lunch, in addition to your water and snacks.

Participants must be comfortable and quick with their kayak rescues.

The weather this time of year is quite variable so keep an eye on the forecast and I'll be sending out info the week before the paddle based on the forecast as well.
