As this is a basic course equivalency paddle, we will focus on assessment of basic strokes and rescues, keeping the SK level at III or below. We will do a 7-8 nm trip if timing and conditions allow, to satisfy the trip requirement for basic course equivalency. A short quiz will be provided beforehand and the answer sheet will be due before launch. Additionally, some basic knowledge will be tested verbally at times throughout the day.
Meet at Freshwater Bay boat launch at 11 am. Launch at 12 noon.

Required Equipment
These eight essentials plus The Ten Essentials are required on all sea kayaking trips. All but the whistle and clothing should be provided with any kayak rental.
- Floatation in both ends of the kayak
- U.S. Coast Guard approved Personal Flotation Device (PFD)
- Paddle
- Spray skirt
- Bilge pump with floatation
- Self-rescue paddle float
- Waterproof whistle
- Appropriate clothing for the conditions encountered seasonally
- Helmet is recommended if there is swell or seas, as there can be surf at the mouth of the Elwha River. Surf exceeds the rating of this trip, however, so we will do our best to avoid surf launching and landing.
