Sea Kayak - Cape Flattery

This is the Intermediate paddle for the May 31 Surf Camp activity. SK V

  • Sea Kayak V
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 14.0 nm
  • Maximum Wind: 15 kts
  • Maximum Waves: 3 ft
  • Pace: 3.0

We will be meeting at Hobuck beach campground on the evening of May 30 and again on the morning of May 31 to make a final decision about whether conditions allow for this trip to Cape Flattery on May 30.  Launch time will probably be around 9:00 am, but TBD.

Between April 1-14, please only sign up for ONE of the open coastal trips listed in the Surf Camp weekend at Hobuck.  After April 14, you can sign up for  additional trips.  This will allow all participants the opportunity to go on at least one open coastal paddle that weekend!

This is the Intermediate level paddle for the Surf Camp weekend at Hobuck.  That means that as long as conditions are suitable (surf no more than 3' and average wind of no more than 15 kts)  then we are hoping to paddle from Hobuck Beach to the east side of Cape Flattery, and possibly do some rock gardening  or explore sea caves if tide levels allow.  The trip distance is expected to be 12 nm.

If conditions are bigger than that, we will likely change our paddle location to someplace more protected.  One possible alternate route is to launch from Neah Bay and paddle to Cape Flattery, which would make this a 14 nm paddle.

Paddlers must have previous experience in surf, must have skills compatible with those conditions and be able to paddle at a 3 kt pace as well as handle the roundtrip distance of up to 14 nm.   Participants must also be signed up for the Surf Camp Hobuck weekend!

Only sign up for this paddle if you have done these three things (otherwise you are not ready for the longer, more risky open coastal paddles!): 1) You have successfully taken a surf clinic, 2) You have had several extra days of surf practice in addition to your surf clinic and 3) You have gone on an easier open coastal paddle such as Hobuck Beach to Anderson Point within Makah Bay.

Intermediate Kayak Course students:  this paddle will qualify for one of your required 12+ nm paddles as long as we are able to make it to Cape Flattery.  Please let leaders know prior to this paddle if you are hoping to get something signed off in your logbook

Dry suits and helmets required.

Note that this activity  has room for a total of 20 people on the roster.  The day of the paddle, we will be splitting into two groups of 10 and the groups will be paddling separately from each other.
