Sea Kayak - Camano Island

Mid-day ride with the tide down from Tillicum Beach to Camano Head and back. Maybe a gray whale or three will show up to feed on ghost shrimp off the shores of Port Susan.

  • Sea Kayak II
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 7.0 nm
  • Maximum Wind: 10 kts
  • Maximum Waves: 1 ft
  • Maximum Currents: 2 kts
  • Pace: 3

Meet at 10am at Tillicum Beach county park on Camano Island.  Launch by 11am.

Tillicum Beach is on the east side of Camano Island. To find it, use the Google Maps “Plus Code” 84WV4J32+C3 or navigate to 48.1036015, -122.3998126.  As you come down East Camano Drive, turn east on East Karen Way then go north on South Tillicum Beach Drive until you reach the Tillicum Beach county park. Parking space is limited there so please respect local property owners.

The plan is to follow the tide out paddling along the shore to Camano Head.  We’ll take a lunch break there then catch the rising tide back. Probably done by 3pm or so at the latest.  Low tide is not when the whales like to feed and that day the low is at around 12:30pm. If we’re lucky enough to see whales here is a link to guidelines for maintaining a respectful and safe distance: https://www.bewhalewise.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/BWWPos2020online-1.pdf
