Day Hike - Tubal Cain Mine

**Preference given to 2023 Olympia Conditioning Hiking Series participants** Trip will open for registration to all Mountaineers at 9:00 a.m. on Thu. 6/15. Please carefully read the Registration Notes. WTA lists this hike as 7.2 miles with 1600 feet of elevation gain. We plan to extend the hike a bit in order to see the site of a plane crash from 1952 that will add another mile or two (round trip) and 600 feet of elevation.

  • Mileage: 9.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 1,521 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 4,800 ft
  • Pace: 1.75-2.25 mph

Details will be provided via email to registered participants.  We may meet at a location along 101 near Squim Bay State Park for a final bathroom stop (there are no facilities at the trailhead) and caravan to the trailhead as it is 21 miles from 101 to the trailhead with a few turns.

Plan for a long day as travel from Olympia is at least 3 hours and 15 minutes; depending on the time and hiker wishes we may stop for a snack or dinner someplace on the way home.  We're hoping to see some rhododendron in bloom as this trail is known for its tunnel of Rhodies.

My goals for this moderate hiking trip are as follows:

1:  Be safe and prepared.

2.  Have fun and meet/welcome some new friends.

3.  Learn something.

4. Explore this beautiful trail and a couple of its unique features.

My expectations for trip participants are as follows:

1. Practice Leave No Trace principles.

2. Have the physical conditioning necessary for this trip.

3. Be respectful of all participants.  This includes being punctual and being aware of other hiker's experience and how your behavior might impact others.
