Day Hike - Circumambulating Lake Washington

This easy one-way 8-mile hike along the western shore of Lake Washington from South Day Street Park to University Village is the first of seven hikes that will complete a circuit of the lake.

  • Easy
  • Mileage: 8.1 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 416 ft

Meet at 10 a.m. at South Day Street Park, a small waterfront park at the intersection of South Day Street and Lakeside Avenue South, just under the I-90 bridge. Since this is a one-way hike, we recommend taking public transit to the park.  Metro route 27 serves this area, starting from downtown. At the end of the hike, you'll find a number of bus options available from University Village.

Be sure to bring lunch to enjoy at the Arboretum Visitors' Center.

This hike is part of Julie Miller's (206-239-8565, miller.jz@comcast.net) and Kathy Biever's (206-902-6663, eskay39@comcast.net) Circumambulating Lake Washington Hikes Series. The remaining six hikes are scheduled for the first Wednesday of each month, from April to September, 2017.  Dates: April 5, May 3, June 7, July 5, August 2, and September 6

The hike on March 8 will start at South Day Street Park and end at University Village. Heading north to Leschi and Madison Park, we'll walk past a lovely array of neighborhood parks. Then we'll enter verdant Washington Park Arboretum to reach Foster and Marsh Islands on the Ship Canal.  Crossing Montlake Bridge, we'll head to Union Bay Nature Preserve and the Center for Urban Horticulture before ending at nearby University Village.
