Alpental uppermost parking lot, off I-90 Exit 52, 7 am. The location is subject to change due to avalanche conditions, weather. Northwest Forest Pass or equivalent.
This is a snow skills practice day, and is a prerequisite for our winter overnight trip at Mount St. Helens on April 15-16.
We will be practicing essential snow travel skills, including:
- walking in crampons
- walking in balance
- traveling as a rope team
- self belay
- ice axe arrest
- crevasse rescue demonstration

Required Equipment
- The Ten Essentials
- Mountain boots that can accept crampons (not hiking boots)
- Crampons
- An ice axe (not technical ice tools)
- A back pack (40 to 60 liters)
- Webbing and accessory cords
- 6 straight gate carabiners
- 2 locking carabiners
- Large pear-shaped carabiner
- Belay device
- Climbing harness
- Helmet
- Chock pick (nut tool)
- Rescue pulley
- Fleece or puffy jacket
