Alpine Scramble - Red Mountain (Commonwealth Basin)
Depending on the amount and depth of snow cover still remaining, this will either be an enjoyable snow scramble with the possibility of a glissade or two, or a rock scramble mixing some loose and firm rock (or even a combination of both rock and snow). Red is up at the head of Commonwealth Basin an hour's drive away in Snoqualmie Pass and our forecast is for partly sunny weather with what sounds like a minimal chance of a t-storm in the afternoon (by which time we should be safely off the summit!).

Meeting Place: the PCT/Commonwealth Basin TH, Snoqualmie Pass. From the Seattle area, take I-90 eastbound up to the Pass, Exit 52 (West Summit). At the bottom of the exit ramp, turn left, pass under the freeway and look for the TH parking lot, which should be the first right shortly north of the freeway. The party will meet in the lower parking lot (first right up the TH road). There is a Forest Service outhouse. The usual trail parking pass required.
Meeting Time: please plan to arrive around 7:45 in order to be able to be geared up and ready to start by 8:00 a.m.
The extent of the remaining snow cover is uncertain. As always, please bring your ice axes and helmets. If the snow is mostly gone, this becomes a rock and way-trail scramble. We will avoid the way-trail on the way up in a search for firm rock on the SW corner of the peak, but there is some unavoidable loose stuff too. Learning how to find the firm stuff amid the less solid is a scrambling skill in itself that is essential to acquire in the Cascades! We will exit by the way-trail up the W face of Red after we summit (unless it is still under snow). The way-trail can be a little loose and grimy and steep, but is generally tolerable.
