Alpine Scramble - Naches Peak

Rainier 100s! Scramble of Tahtlum Peak and hopefully Naches Peak which has a difficult, very exposed section.

  • Strenuous 2, Technical 5
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 7.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 2,500 ft
  • Pace: Moderate

Chinook pass parking lot near the Naches peak trailhead at 7:30 A.M.

This a scramble targeting Tahtlum first,  then Naches Peak -- both are Rainier 100s. Tahtlum is straightforward while Naches is challenging and exposed. If the rock is wet or the group isn't feeling up to Naches, we will only do Tahtlum.

We will hike the PCT to the bootpath up Tahtlum first, then head back to Chinook Pass. From there, we will take the NW ridge route up Naches. The crux of Naches is reported to be an exposed downclimb on the ascent where it is difficult to see your feet. See a trip report as well as additional SummitPost photos here and here. We will evaluate and only proceed if the group agrees it is safe to do so.

Due to exposure and potential rockfall risk, participants must have been on at least one T4/5 rock scramble (preferably more). No students.

When requesting leader’s permission, tell me about your experience and comfort with T4/5 rock scrambles. Permission requests before registration opens will be ignored.
