Labor Day scramble of Mt. Shasta's non-technical route for Olympia scramble students.

  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 16.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 7,800 ft

  • Pace: 1000ft/hr

Olympia TBD. 4am Friday, Aug. 30. May drive to Salem Thursday evening to miss Labor Day traffic through Portland.

High clearance vehicles required to reach TH.

This is a 4-day expedition type scramble to 14,000ft+ and a 1,000mi road trip to Northern California. This may be the first "official" Mountaineers scramble on this route, and we're trying it out with a strong group of scramble students who need it for graduation and emerging leaders who need it for leadership badges.

To request permission, you must have hiked or scrambled with us before, you must be dialed with gear and fitness and have high altitude experience (felt great at Muir, at minimum). And you must be friendly, inclusive, low-maintenance and mentally stable enough to deal with a long drive and a big, hard weekend. Also, please see essentials for financial commitments for the trip. Right now the activity is full. It will open for a wait list between July 28 and Aug. 11. Do not request permission except during that time.

Fri., Aug 30 - 4am depart Olympia. 12pm lunch in Ashland. 2pm Buy permits in Mt. Shasta. 4:30pm TH 6400ft. 7:30pm make camp at 8500ft.

Sat., Aug. 31 - morning get water from spring, move up to higher camp (10 or 11,000ft)

Sun., Sept 1 - 3am start to summit (early start to avoid climbers kicking rocks down from above). Summit by 8:30. Descend to high camp, pack up and back down to base camp at 8500, or out to TH. Camp.

Mon., Sept 2 - out, b-fast in town, public showers in Weed, long drive home.
