Alpine Scramble - Mount Adams/South Spur

This will be a two-day scramble to the summit of Mt Adams. We'll overnight at Lunch Counter and enjoy a sunset camp dinner before hitting the sleeping bags. Early rise for a beautiful scramble up Piker's Peak (false summit) to the tippy-top of Mt. Adams.

  • Strenuous 5, Technical 4
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 14.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 6,600 ft

If you choose to carpool, please solicit input from the rest of the team.  At any rate, if you decide to drive down the night before and camp out, or drive early Saturday morning, we will all rendezvous at the Trout Lake Ranger Station to purchase our permits on Saturday morning.  The Ranger Station opens at 8:00am and overnight parking is available so we will be able to consolidate the team into vehicles for the drive to the trailhead.  As the road to the trailhead is fairly bumpy, it is advised that high-clearance vehicles (trucks or SUVs) tackle the route.  Please be in touch with the leader to advise if you would be willing to drive your vehicle to the trailhead and ferry team members.

The first day is a fairly long day of climbing with a heavy overnight pack.  If you wish to share tents/stove with another team member to lighten your load, please make arrangements prior to the scramble.  Tents should be able to withstand high winds -- they will be pitched on scree/sand at the Lunch Counter and, although, there are rock barrier walls for protection at some of the sites, it is always a good idea to prepare for the worst weather conditions.

We will be leaving our campsite intact while we summit early in the morning of July 8th, so your packs will be considerably lighter on the second day.  Bring lots of snacks and water.  On a clear day, you can see for miles, so don't forget to bring camera and batteries!

There is a water source at the Lunch Counter -- be prepared to filter water from that source or melt snow.

To be determined.

Each scrambler will need to purchase a permit $15 per person before climbing Mt. Adams.  We will coordinate a stop at the Trout Lake Ranger Station on Saturday morning on our way to the trailhead so we can purchase the permits.  Please have cash or checks for this purpose.
