Alpine Scramble - Buell & Barrier Peaks

New location due to weather conditions and road closure

  • Strenuous 3, Technical 3
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 8.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 3,000 ft
  • Pace: 1,000 ft/hr

6:30am meet time at Enumclaw Safeway or 7:30am at Deer Creek Trailhead.  Please note early meet time to maximize daylight.  Sunset is set for 5:56pm.

New location - Buell Peak -- possibly Barrier if conditions allow.  This is a change of location from Governor's Ridge and Barrier due to early closure of White River Road and lousy weather.

The plan is to depart the Deer Creek Trailhead and then head up Buell.  If we have good visibility/weather/conditions/time/desire, we will continue up to Barrier and then down the west side of Barrier.

The pace of this scramble will be moderate.  We'll go fast enough to keep the heart pumping, but no so fast that we can't actually talk to each other.  We'll take snack and layer breaks as needed and photo stops are certainly allowed.

Since it is fall season and we're possibly going over 6,000 feet, please layer and dress properly.  You will definitely need the helmet.  Bring the ice axe in the car and I'll monitor those conditions.

This is exploratory but I have been in the area and we have a team member who has done this route previously.
