Backpack - North Fork Skokomish River to Spike Camp

Preference to Tacoma Introduction to Backpacking students. Trip will open to all Mountaineers to register on April 30. An easy short backpack along the River to Spike Camp where we’ll set up for the night. We will offer optional day hikes in the area.

10 am at the Staircase Ranger Station.

 

A 3.5 mile backpack gaining 650 feet of elevation along the North Fork of the Skokomish River to our camp for the night at Spike Camp. A bear wire and pit toilet should be available. Learn various backpacking and camping tips from 2 experienced leaders with decades of backpacking experience. 

Let’s plan to be moving by 10 am. We will meet in the overflow parking lot located   here  A National Park Pass or equivalent is required. 

Optional day hikes in the area like  up to Flap Jack Lakes in 7mi R/T with 2550 ft of elevation gain and/or continuing along the river for 10 miles R/T or so with 1300 ft of elevation gain. Depending on the interests of those in the group.

The trip leader needs to be reimbursed  $9 for the reservation fee, this includes the $8 individual fee with a portion of $6 reservation fee. 

 The following is good info and is not required for this trip.There is an annual wilderness pass unique to the Olympics, ( see below) it pays off if you plan on spending more than 7 nights in the Park, supply the # to the leader by April 13 if you have one of these.  

The Olympic National Park Annual Wilderness Pass is $45 per person. The pass covers per night camping fees for 12 months from the month of purchase for the individual pass holder; permits and reservations are still required for pass holders. It can be found on Rec.gov  under ONP Wilderness Permit…Fees & Cancellations header then go to the bottom of the page.

  • Tent with footprint/ground tarp
  • Stove and fuel
  • Sleeping bag
  • Sleeping pad

  • Cooking pot/pan with plate and utensils
  • Toilet paper and shovel or blue bag to deal with waste
