GPS Navigation: Using CalTopo and Gaia GPS

Smart Phone & Dedicated GPS - Seattle 2016

This class is intended for people who have already completed the Basic Navigation course and are looking to add a GPS to their navigation toolbox.

The Smart Phone & Dedicated GPS one night class will run about an hour inside working through a PowerPoint deck covering basic GPS navigation functions, hardware considerations, and a toolbox of apps. We then head outside for some hands on practice using your GPS.

Students need to bring their own GPS enabled device, loaners are not available.  Instructors are prepared to help with a limited range of devices.  Approved devices include:

  • A dedicated Garmin GPS
  • An iPhone with the Gaia GPS app (professional version is not required)
  • An Android smart phone with Gaia or Backcountry Navigator Pro

We recommend that students also bring their adjustable declination compass, a headlamp, note paper and a pen or pencil.

Dress for the weather as the final hour is outside in Magnuson Park.

The workshop starts at 6:30 and typically runs until around 9:30.
