Moss & Lichen Workshop - Seattle - 2020

Naturalist Course

Moss Workshop

In this workshop we will learn to identify common mosses, liverworts and lichens of our lowland forests.

Mosses, liverworts, and lichens positively brighten NW winter forests and river valleys. In this workshop you will learn how to identify up to 35 mosses, several liverworts, and 10 or more common lichens using a visual key designed for the course and provided to students.

The workshop, which includes an evening study at the Mountaineers and a half day field trip locally, will open for registration to members of the Naturalist Study Group on December 30th and to all others on January 6th.

February 2 will be the back-up weather date for this course.  Please hold that date open on your calendar.

Required Equipment

For identification you will want to have a magnifying loupe of 20-30 power. Lighted is better for dark forests. Good loupes can be obtained at the University Bookstore or at Minerox by mail.

Even better is to use a macro lens to image specimens you see in the field for permanent record.
